The Stroller Seat and Stroller Harness
are critical to baby's
comfort and safety...
A good stroller seat reclines fully, and has adequate width and
seat-back
height, and is not situated too high off the ground
- Even though most do not recline to a truly flat position,
pay
attention to the degree of recline given your child's age. Babies
should lie flat,
and
toddlers should
sit upright. A reclining seat is
much safer for babies and also allows them to sleep more easily
- Stroller Seat height, width, and depth are critical for baby's comfort. It's an issue that most parents 'clue into' only after their stroller purchase. In general, you'll find that most seat-backs are around 20" high, seat-bottoms around 10" long, and knee-to-foot length around 11" - 12"
- Make sure that the stroller you end up buying does not have stroller seat measurements that are significantly smaller than those mentioned. If you neglect this, you could end up with a stroller that won't fit your child or one that your child out-grows very quickly
- Height off the ground affects stability when running. The
lower
the child sits, the more stable the stroller - but you don't want your
child riding too low! For example the attachable back seat of the Phil
& Ted e3 Explorer rides very low to the ground when a 25lb child is
travelling in the rear. Seat issues must be taken into consideration
when you are test-driving the different brands and models.
The 5 Point Harness
- A harness is a series of straps that holds the child in the
stroller.
(Like a fancy
seat-belt). The 5-point harness is generally accepted as
the safest way to keep your child secure. 5Pt Harness 150 It has
(surprise, surprise) 5 straps: two at the shoulders, two at the hips,
and one at the crotch
- Look for a harness that is easy for you to lock and unlock, and can be operated with one hand. (It should be tamper proof and difficult for the toddler to unlock!)
- Make sure that straps are well padded and that the
adjustable
sliders
are easy to operate - and easy to operate with one hand. When testing,
ensure that the harness is sufficiently adjustable to hold any size
toddler snugly.
- For those in cold climates, bulky sweaters and snow
suits will alter how snugly the child fits. Once again, make sure that
the straps can extend far enough to accomodate this.
