Jogging stroller brakes come in three formats: hand, parking, and tether. Models in the better brands feature all three options, others have two, and some have only one.

You don't ever want to have a runaway stroller on your hands, so investigate which jogging stroller brakes options are available on your favorite model.

Hand Brakes

Most high-end models have a bicycle style hand-brake mounted on the handlebar. This brake applies stopping power to the front-wheel only but is not really intended to stop a speeding stroller pushed by a fast moving runner.

In truth, when running downhill the front wheel often tends to ‘hop’ and you lose your front wheel braking anyway - the manufacturers don’t tell you about this!  In all fairness however, it provides sufficient stopping power to walkers and light joggers.  Jogging stroller brakes that are accessible from the handlebar are a good idea.

Parking Brake

When you need to stop a stationary stroller from moving, parking brakes are just the thing. For example, when you stop to adjust a mitten or load in some groceries, you engage the brake to ensure that the stroller won't roll back and forth.

In some cases this brake is engaged by a push-button mounted on the handlebar, in others, by a foot pedal located beside or between the rear wheels.

Serious runners take note: The brake mechanism consists of a bar running behind the rear axle which can affect your running motion. Those with longer strides often bump their feet up against the bar when in motion. This is something that you should investigate when test-driving strollers before you buy.

Wrist Strap

Almost all brands provide a wrist strap / tether, as the last line of defence for stopping. One end of the strap is fixed to the rear axle or some part of the frame and other end goes around your wrist or your torso. 

This photo shows the  wrist strap attached  to the  handlebar, but this sometimes makes the stroller tippy  if you should stumble.
